What are the system reqirements?
Desktop PC
No Celerons.
Note that dual core pc's only run on one channel for most software and are often no quicker than the AMD3000 of a few years ago.
Do not be fooled by big numbers as they only furn on one cylinder at a time for most software.
So dont buy a slow one.
1G network port. Do not accept 100Mbit. If they try sell you a 100Mb treat them as morons.
Separate network card. Onboard cards are inadequate for large screens and use system ram because they have insufficient video card ram.
Modem if you wish to fax direct from BusDiary.
Harddrive speed is important.
The latest versions of Microsoft Office use MS Word as their editor in MS Outlook. MS Word handles html poorly. Html emails used in BusDiary do not render well. Avoid.
So:
No Celerons.
No onboard videocards.
No old technology 100Mb Nics.
Antivirus
Antivirus autoprotect can kill the performance of desktop databases even when the appropriate directories are excluded. Beware. Particularly if they are monitoring the newwork.
Antivirus can affect your life. Be warned.
Vista.
BusDiary itself runs well on Vista.
BusDiary is possibly quicker on Vista.
The print delay with XP disappears.
There is one warning message on shutting down BusDiary that is currently unavoidable but it does not affect the functionality of BusDiary.
However:
WinFax does not work. You will lose the ability to AutoFax.
Vista does not get so many spurious file locking problems that can cause problems with pdf995. However it does lock down some directories such as the html email directory so you will have to use a different html email directory.
Screens
Screens must be 1024 pixels wide or 1024 pixels rotated.
1280x1024 19inch seem to be most popular at present rotated to give 1024Hx1280V or adjusted to a non-native 1024x768.
Most widescreens have insufficient vertical pixels and you can lose the very bottom of some forms.
Make sure the videocard software is capable of rotating the screen.
Do not use aftermarket rotation software such as Pivot.
Network
1G please.
Those using 1G report much better performance.
Performance is dependant on:
Network throughput. 1G better than 100Mb
Server harddrive response time.
Response time of firewalls and antivirus to allow pasage of data.
Server
Use a separate physical drive for the Data.
Use a WD Raptor or Raid drive or one of the new solid state drives.
(Side issue. There are reports of Server 2002 having a performance issue with some desktop databases. No clear resolution available.
Antivirus will cause slowdowns as it checks data files and temporary files and lock files which all change very rapidly when numbercrunching.
Main Machines on Peer-to-Peer networks.
Use a separate physical drive for the data.
Use a WD Raptor or Raid drive or one of the new solid state drives.

Spare offsite BusDiary machine.
Have an offsite machine setup for BusDiary in case of disaster. (An old notebook will suffice.)
Backups and disater recovery.
Modern backup and recovery is now comparitively good.
But you will require BusDiary operational withing about half hour of a disaster.
So you will need an offsite notebook setup for BusDiary within a few minutes of your depot.
You will need to do data backups to flashdrives on a daily basis and kept offsite by two different persons.

I usually do it for $2200 for the first year then $1100 for following years for larger fleets and $1100 then $550 for single vehicle fleets.
You should save significantly more than this in office time and expenses.
Then make more on increased turnover.

BusDiary was written in December 1993 and January 1994 on a round the world trip by Andy Chalkley on a notebook.
It was written to run his bus company "Down Under Bus and Coach". It has been constantly upgraded since.
